Pregnancy app on Iphone

If you are pregnant or just thinking about it, there are iPhone apps that can help you get through the process. It’s true that these apps don’t make the pain ago away, but they do let you keep track of things and become more knowledgeable. With that in mind, here are 10 cool iPhone applications for pregnant women:

Woman Calendar: it may be more complicated than any calendar I have seen, but I have been told it’s a very useful tool for women who want to get pregnant or avoid it.
137
Pregnancy Calendar: a comprehensive tracking application for pregnancy period. It lets you keep track of what you eat, your weight, doctor visit, baby kicks, and more.

iPregnancy: one of the most popular pregnancy applications for iPhone. Helps you find out when your baby is due and even create a name list with it. Many of my friends have recommended this app so it had to be here.

Pregnancy Alarm: it’s essentially an ovulation calendar. It’s very colorful and from the feedback I have got, it does what it’s supposed to do (I have got to say testing some of these apps is not that easy if you are a guy).

Pregnancy Pregnant: similar to iPregnancy. I have to give the nod to that app, but some prefer this one. Great gift for the mommy in your life.
142
Foods to Avoid When Pregnant: another very useful app for moms to be. If you are going to be a mom soon, you know your kid’s going to need the proper nutrition. Make sure you eat the right thing with this app.

Contraction Master: it’s a cool contraction timer that makes it easy to send your information to your doctor and keep track of your progress.

Pregnancy Tracker: tells you everything you need to know about your baby. Estimated size, progress, …. You just name it.

NineMonths: keeps track of your fetal movements and contractions. It keeps track of time, intensity, count, and so on.

Life Help: a simple little app that tells you how you can deal with all kinds of issues including motherhood.
There you have it. If you are a mom to be and want to use your phone to manage your situation better, the above pregnancy apps come in handy.

cute signing baby!...baby sign language

Interesting way to communicate with your baby!!

About My Smart Hands
Laura Berg, Founder of MSH:
When I was pregnant with my first child I wanted to find a way to stay at home with her but still have an income. Necessity being the mother of invention, I used the skills I had as a teacher and my knowledge of ASL and began teaching sign language to parents of hearing babies.  My classes became so successful that I founded My Smart Hands, which has now grown into an international company
It started when I was working as an eighth grade teacher, running the literacy program at my school. The old program we were using wasn’t working so my principal asked me to try to find different ways to help our students improve their literacy skills. While doing research I came across a study that used the American Sign Language (ASL) alphabet to help students develop their spelling skills. I was fascinated with this concept, it made complete sense. ASL encompasses a number of learning styles but specifically kinesthetic and visual. I took this theory to my school, designed a great curriculum and began to have success with it. This led to me lecturing for teacher education programs at universities on the concept of using sign language to help promote literacy in our schools. These lectures,  I’m please to say, were very well received.
Further into my research I came across several articles and research studies on using sign language with babies.  This concept fascinated me and it made me want to sign with my baby when I had one.  The benefits of signing with children are far greater than simple communication (read more about this in our FAQ page).
This all lead me to the creation of My Smart Hands. With my background, teaching baby signing classes seemed to be the perfect fit! In 2005, while pregnant with my daughter, I began designing the My Smart Hands curriculum .  After signing with my new daughter and seeing her learn ASL, I was even more confident that this was the right career path for me. I fine tuned my program, designed a manual with a CD to accompany it and opened up my company to other instructors.  I wanted to give as many families as possible the opportunity to sign with their babies with help from a qualified My Smart Hands presenter.
Here we are now, several years later and My Smart Hands is an international company with nearly 100 instructors and growing every day!  All of my instructors have unique backgrounds but we all have one thing in common, a love for signing!  All of My Smart Hands instructors are required to have formal ASL training. We pride ourselves in being an educationally based company that will deliver fulfilling and exciting classes to the parents that take them!
I am so honored to have such a well respected company and to have such amazing people represent my vision of My Smart Hands!

A Chinese archaeologist discovered and drew this chart which was buried in a royal tomb about 700 years ago. The original is kept in the Institute of Science of Peking. It said that the accuracy of the chart has been proven by thousands of people and it is believed to be 99 percent accurate! Follow a line drawn from the figure representing your lunar age at conception to a line drawn from the month your baby was conceived. For instance, a 28-year-old woman who conceived in January with give birth to a boy, according to the Chinese Lunar Calendar. The chart is based on the month the baby is conceived and not when the baby was or will be born.Put it to the test! If you're a mother, please check the month you conceived and your actual age at the date of conception plus 9 months.

Smoking During Pregnancy!!!!

smoking pregnancy 300x246 Smoking and Pregnancy Is light cigarette safer?
smoking and pregnancy
Here’s the fact, whatever the commercials tell u, it ain’t right.
They can put any label on the smoke, but the supposedly low nicotine
or low tar have almost the same amount of nicotine and tar as the
regular one.
So you know now that switching to “light” cigarettes is not going to
do you or your baby any favor.

Why it isn’t any safer?

smoke 300x193 Smoking and Pregnancy Is light cigarette safer?
smoking and pregnancy
In the manufacturing process, tobaco companies simply changed the
design on their cigarettes so that they produce less toxins when put
on test on the machines in the labs. For example, putting tiny vents
in the filter so the machines suck in fresh air as well as cigarette
smoke. But when you inhale that thing, the differences is nulled.
Because when a real person smoke cigarettes, they adjust the smoking
technique automatically. They puff more frequently and breathe
deeper. Also when people smoke, they cover the vents in the filters
with their finges. Thus turning the light smoke into a regular one.
In the end, smokers get their full dose of nicotine, plus the carbon
monoxide and tar and the rest of the toxins.

Why should you care?

These toxins can be hazardous to a pregnant woman and her pregnancy.
If you’re worried, then good, you need to quit. Switching to light
cigarette is not the answer, and the sooner the better.
I’ll cover the why you can’t smoke during pregnancy later.
Best of luck in your pregnancy,
have a happy and healthy one.

Sleeping Position During Pregnancy

Sleep Positions during Pregnancy
images Sleep Positions during Pregnancy
Throughout the early trimesters, most women don’t have any problems on sleeping. As the womb grows and expands however, you may find it a bit challenging to go to bed. Around 5 months most pregnant women find that they have more and more trouble to get comfortable on bed.
It’s vital that you do find a comfy position and get as much rest as you can. Pregnancy pillows may be an answer to your trouble. Getting enough sleep will not only help you get refreshed but also help both you and your baby to stay healthy throughout your pregnancy.
Comfy Sleeping Positions
sleep during pregnancy 250x300 Sleep Positions during Pregnancy
  1. Lie on your sides. Most women find out that lying on their side is the most comfortable position to sleep during pregnancy. Many doctors recommend pregnant women to lie on their left side. This promotes optimal blood flow for you and your baby. It is not written in stones, should you feel more comfortable on your right side there’s really no reason to avoid that.
  2. images 1 Sleep Positions during Pregnancy
  3. Avoid lying on your back. This is not recommended, as this will compress your inferior vena cava (The major vein bringing back blood from your lower body parts to the heart). If you compress this vein, you’ll disrupt the blood flow, this could end up make you dizzy or lightheaded, and in the long run it can cause many other symptoms such as hemorrhoids, varicose, etc.
  4. pregnancy pillow Sleep Positions during Pregnancy
  5. Add some support. Most women will also find that they need added support while sleeping. This can easily accomplished by using a body or pregnancy pillow. Tuck the pillow under your belly and legs, and use a smaller pillow to support your back so you don’t roll over on your back while sleeping.
  6. sleeping pregnant 300x199 Sleep Positions during Pregnancy
  7. Try reclined / semi reclined positions. Some women find that a semi-reclined position work best for them. Stack some pillows behind your back, but avoid lying on your back. Again, nothing is written in stones, if you find you rolled on to your back simply roll back to one of your sides and go back to sleep.
  8. Finally, don’t be afraid to experiment. There are dozens of sleeping positions you can try at home, but the most important thing is for you to feel comfortable. There really is no golden position for pregnant woman, as each pregnancy is unique so does the ways of coping with it. You may find that an extra lift under the arm or even a light pillow resting on top of their head to be the best position, well don’t hesitate to do so.

What are the foods I should avoid during pregnancy?

Eating well balanced meals is important at all times, but it is even more essential when you are pregnant. There are essential nutrients, vitamins, and minerals that your developing baby needs. Most foods are safe; however, there are some foods that you should avoid during pregnancy.
Women should avoid raw sushi during pregnancy.

What are the foods I should avoid during pregnancy?

Raw Meat: Uncooked seafood and rare or undercooked beef or poultry should be avoided because of the risk of contamination with coliform bacteria, toxoplasmosis, and salmonella.
Deli Meat: Deli meats have been known to be contaminated with listeria, which can cause miscarriage. Listeria has the ability to cross the placenta and may infect the baby leading to infection or blood poisoning, which may be life-threatening. If you are pregnant and you are considering eating deli meats, make certain that you reheat the meat until it is steaming.
Fish with Mercury: Fish that contain high levels of mercury should be avoided. Mercury consumed during pregnancy has been linked to developmental delays and brain damage. A sample of these types of fish include: shark, swordfish, king mackerel, and tilefish. Canned, chunk light tuna generally has a lower amount of mercury than other tuna, but still should only be eaten in moderation. Certain types of fish used in sushi should also be avoided due to high levels of mercury. Please see Mercury in Fish for specific types of fish and further information on how to calculate mercury levels.

Smoked Seafood -Refrigerated, smoked seafood often labeled as lox, nova style, kippered, or jerky should be avoided because it could be contaminated with Listeria. (These are safe to eat when they are in an ingredient in a meal that has been cooked, like a casserole.) This type of fish is often found in the deli section of your grocery store. Canned or shelf-safe smoked seafood is usually OK to eat.
Fish Exposed to Industrial Pollutants: Avoid fish from contaminated lakes and rivers that may be exposed to high levels of polychlorinated biphenyls. This is primarily for those who fish in local lakes and streams. These fish include: bluefish, striped bass, salmon, pike, trout, and walleye. Contact the local health department or Environmental Protection Agency to determine which fish are safe to eat in your area. Remember, this is regarding fish caught in local waters and not fish from your local grocery store.

Raw Eggs: Raw eggs or any foods that contain raw eggs should be avoided because of the potential exposure to salmonella. Some homemade Caesar dressings, mayonnaise, homemade ice cream or custards, and Hollandaise sauces may be made with raw eggs.

Raw Shellfish: The majority of seafood-borne illness is caused by undercooked shellfish, which include oysters, clams, and mussels. Cooking helps prevent some types of infection, but it does not prevent the algae-related infections that are associated with red tides. Raw shellfish pose a concern for everybody, and they should be avoided altogether during pregnancy.
If the recipe is cooked at some point, this will reduce the exposure to salmonella. Commercially manufactured ice cream, dressings, and eggnog are made with pasteurized eggs and do not increase the risk of salmonella. Restaurants should be using pasteurized eggs in any recipe that is made with raw eggs, such as Hollandaise sauce or dressings.
Soft Cheeses: Imported soft cheeses may contain bacteria called Listeria, which can cause miscarriage. Listeria has the ability to cross the placenta and may infect the baby leading to infection or blood poisoning, which can be life-threatening. You would need to avoid soft cheeses such as: Brie, Camembert, Roquefort, Feta, Gorgonzola and Mexican style cheeses that include queso blanco and queso fresco, unless they clearly state that they are made from pasteurized milk. All soft non-imported cheeses made with pasteurized milk are safe to eat.
Unpasteurized Milk: Unpasteurized milk may contain bacteria called listeria, which can cause miscarriage. Listeria has the ability to cross the placenta and may infect the baby leading to infection or blood poisoning, which can be life-threatening. Make sure that any milk you drink is pasteurized.
Pate: Refrigerated pate or meat spreads should be avoided because they may contain the bacteria listeria. Canned pate, or shelf-safe meat spreads can be eaten.
Caffeine: Although most studies show that caffeine intake in moderation is OK, there are others that show that caffeine intake may be related to miscarriages. Avoid caffeine during the first trimester to reduce the likelihood of amiscarriage. As a general rule, caffeine should be limited to fewer than 300 mg per day during pregnancy. Caffeine is a diuretic, which means it helps eliminate fluids from the body. This can result in water and calcium loss. It is important that you are drinking plenty of water, juice, and milk rather than caffeinated beverages. Some research shows that large amounts of caffeine are associated with miscarriage, premature birth, low birth weight, and withdrawal symptoms in infants. The safest thing is to refrain from consuming caffeine.
AlcoholThere is NO amount of alcohol that is known to be safe during pregnancy, and therefore alcohol should be avoided during pregnancy. Prenatal exposure to alcohol can interfere with the healthy development of the baby. Depending on the amount, timing, and pattern of use, alcohol consumption during pregnancy can lead to Fetal Alcohol Syndrome or other developmental disorders. If you consumed alcohol before you knew you were pregnant, stop drinking now. You should continue to avoid alcohol during breastfeeding. Exposure of alcohol to an infant poses harmful risks, and alcohol does reach the baby during breastfeeding.
Unwashed Vegetables: Yes, vegetables are safe to eat, so you still need to eat them. However, it is essential to make sure they are washed to avoid potential exposure to toxoplasmosis. Toxoplasmosis may contaminate the soil where the vegetables were grown.
